最佳 Motorcycle Locks and Security Systems

中文

A motivated thief can steal an unprotected motorcycle in under a minute. They lift it into a van, roll it away after defeating the steering lock, or simply cut a cheap cable lock and ride off. The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that over 50,000 motorcycles are stolen annually in the United States, and the recovery rate is only about 40 percent. Those recovered bikes are often stripped or damaged.

The goal of motorcycle security is not to make your bike theft-proof, because nothing truly is.

The goal is to make your bike harder and more time-consuming to steal than the one parked next to it. Layered security, using multiple systems together, multiplies the time and tools required to steal your bike, which is usually enough to make thieves move on.

Disc Locks

Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Disc Lock

Kryptonite makes the most recognizable heavy-duty locks in the industry, and the New York Fahgettaboudit is their toughest motorcycle disc lock.

The 18mm hardened steel shackle resists bolt cutters, hacksaws, and pry attacks. It weighs about 5 pounds, which tells you how much metal is between a thief and your front rotor.

The lock attaches to your brake disc, preventing the wheel from rotating. Even if someone breaks the steering lock and puts the bike in neutral, they cannot roll it away. The bright orange color acts as a visual deterrent, signaling to thieves that this bike is locked and not worth the trouble.

The downside of any disc lock is that it does not prevent the bike from being lifted into a vehicle.

Disc locks are best used in combination with a chain lock anchored to something immovable. Together, they cover both rolling and lifting theft methods.

Xena XX6 Disc Lock with Alarm

The Xena XX6 combines a disc lock with a built-in motion-sensing alarm. If someone touches or moves the bike, the alarm emits a 120-decibel siren that is loud enough to be heard several blocks away.

The alarm arms automatically when the lock is engaged and uses replaceable batteries that last about a year.

The lock itself uses a 6mm pin and stainless steel body. It is not as beefy as the Kryptonite, which means it is lighter and easier to carry. For most thieves, the alarm is the real deterrent. The noise draws attention, creates panic, and typically sends them running.

At around $50 to $70, the Xena XX6 is one of the most cost-effective security upgrades you can make. It is small enough to carry in a jacket pocket and installs in seconds.

Chain Locks

Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain

If you can only buy one security device, make it a heavy chain lock.

The Kryptonite New York chain uses 14mm six-sided links of hardened manganese steel that resist cutting, sawing, and freezing attacks. The included disc-style lock is pick-resistant and drill-resistant.

Thread the chain through your rear wheel (harder to cut than the front), around the frame or swingarm, and through a fixed anchor point like a ground anchor, parking meter, or steel railing. This prevents both rolling and lifting.

A thief would need a battery-powered angle grinder and several minutes of very loud, visible cutting to get through this chain.

The weight is the trade-off. The 5-foot chain weighs about 16 pounds. You are not carrying this around casually. It is best suited for home security or regular parking locations where you can leave it locked to an anchor. For travel, a lighter chain (like Kryptonite's Evolution series) combined with a disc lock provides reasonable security at lower weight.

GPS Trackers

Monimoto 9 GPS Tracker

GPS trackers do not prevent theft, but they dramatically increase recovery chances.

The Monimoto 9 is designed specifically for motorcycles. It is small enough to hide inside your fairings, under the seat, or in a tool compartment. When the bike moves without your key fob nearby, it sends a text message and GPS coordinates to your phone within 30 seconds.

The tracker uses its own cellular connection (the subscription costs about $4 per month) and has a battery that lasts 12 to 24 months between charges. It works independently of the motorcycle's electrical system, meaning thieves cannot disable it by disconnecting the battery.

The real-time tracking updates every 30 seconds when the bike is moving, allowing you to direct police to the exact location.

Many motorcycle theft recoveries happen within hours when a GPS tracker is involved.

Alarm Systems

Scorpio Ride SR-i900

The Scorpio SR-i900 is a comprehensive alarm system with perimeter detection, tilt sensing, and a two-way pager that alerts you up to a mile away. If someone approaches your bike, leans it, or tries to move it, the system responds with escalating warnings: a chirp, then a full siren.

The two-way pager vibrates and displays the alert type so you know whether it was a minor bump or an actual theft attempt.

You can arm and disarm the system from the pager without approaching the bike.

Installation requires connecting to your motorcycle's electrical system, which means basic wiring skills or a professional install. The system hides under the seat and is not visible to thieves, who may not even know it is there until the siren activates.

Building a Layered Security System

No single device is sufficient.

The most effective motorcycle security uses multiple layers.

Layer 1: Steering lock. Every motorcycle has one. Use it every time you park, even for quick stops. It is free and adds a few minutes of delay.

Layer 2: Disc lock with alarm. Quick to install, acts as both a physical barrier and an audible deterrent. Carry this every ride.

Layer 3: Chain lock. For home parking and regular stops.

Anchor your bike to something immovable. This is your strongest physical defense.

Layer 4: GPS tracker. Hidden on the bike for recovery if all else fails. The insurance benefit alone (many insurers offer discounts for GPS-tracked vehicles) can offset the subscription cost.

Layer 5: Cover. A motorcycle cover hides your bike from opportunistic thieves who scan parking areas for targets. Out of sight, out of mind. A cover also obscures any security devices, keeping thieves guessing about what they will encounter.

Each layer adds time and complexity to a theft attempt. A thief who sees a disc lock might try anyway. A thief who sees a disc lock, feels a chain, and hears an alarm will almost certainly walk away. Layer your security, and your bike becomes someone else's problem.
